Runners across the week
Hours continuous running & filming
Live edited highlights videos produced
Sportswear brand Asics and Unit 9 tasked Flux Broadcast with filming the launch of their new running shoe on ‘The Blackout Track’ – the world’s first pitch black running track, designed to train the mind. Located in the Print Works, London, celebrities such as Davina McCall, Mo Farah and key social influencers took part in various running challenges throughout the week, all on the unique running surface. Capturing theses challenges would test Flux’s knowledge to the absolute limit, and push our team to achieve their innovative best.
Any filmmaker will tell you – filming in the dark is tough, and we had to work with Asics and Unit 9 in order to find the right technical solution to fit their needs. We settled on a strategy designed around specialist lenses and large sensor cameras that could handle the extreme low light conditions. A 4K slow motion camera and a thermal imaging camera would show how the runner was performing throughout. Using our OB PPU we output to big screens and viewing galleries within the event space, which meant that contributors could track the runners movements. We also output the feed to our live ingest editing system to put together real time highlights packages for the contributors to take away and share across their social channels after competing.
Our team had to film 40 runners across five days, and keep up with 75 hours of continuous running. Content was broadcast across three huge screens and there were 50 live simultaneous edits. Flux is just thankful they didn’t ask us to lace up our runners and join in as well!
