The Project

 

In these uncertain times, it has never been more important to look out for one another. This is especially true for the most vulnerable amongst us. So when The United Nations approached Flux Broadcast to help them launch an exciting new fundraising scheme for refugees around the world, we jumped at the chance.

 

The plan was for two footballing icons (and former refugees), Alphonso Davies and Asmir Begovic to go head-to-head in a Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 tournament to raise COVID-19 relief funds for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). 

 

Using our specialised remote broadcast solution, the event would be live streamed around the world with the players – safely in their own homes –  interacting with fans, as well as each other, as they battle it out on the virtual pitch.

The Goal

 

Alongside capturing the live drama of the one-on-one matches, we knew we needed to convey a sense of Alphonso and Asmir as people. They both have big personalities which we wanted to showcase, prior to the live stream a remote production kit was sent to each player, pre-configured and with the ability for our engineers to access and control them remotely, this made sure that their in-game banter was captured to the highest standard using high-quality cameras and microphones.

The audience could ask questions in real-time which were relayed by a presenter, while Alphonso and Asmir responded mid-game. A four way split screen using PIP (picture in picture) meant viewers wouldn’t miss a single second of the action.

The Impact

 

Despite Alphonso playing in Germany and Asmir in Italy, our remote broadcast solution meant that all of the talent involved could participate from the safety of their own homes, with Flux engineers supporting at every step of the way.

 

Streaming simultaneously on Twitch, Twitter, Mixer and the UNHCR website, the event posted some impressive figures. We had 1.3 million viewers on Twitter and other platforms saw a surge in interest as news of the competition spread. Most importantly, the stream raised over €10,000 (and counting), for some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
