The Project
To celebrate a decade of Portrait Artist of the Year, Flux were asked to creatively produce a one of a kind record breaking broadcast, bringing together thousands of artists.
Hosted by Yinka Bokinni, with people tuning in from Norway, Portugal, Canada and the US, live and virtual artists were invited to try and set the record for the largest group of people painting a portrait at once.
Despite being artists of production and streaming Flux weren’t asked to sit so instead the incredible Lenny Henry was invited down to sit in for this auspicious event.
Behind the scenes Flux were certainly kept busy providing feeds to judge whilst producing and delivering a live show for fans across the world.
The Goal
With a world record on the line, clean and clear feeds were absolutely essential to confirm the record was broken. The live show also needed to have a careful balance of entertainment and artistic time to ensure people could see Lenny but also be drawn in and entertained by the show, especially with fans watching along who might not be painting.
With this in mind Flux got to work on producing the live show, delivering the script and live format as well as the technical solution on location and remotely. Onsite we had our custom build PPU complete with audio, graphics, playback and vision control, this was paired with a Blackmagic Ursa G2 camera footprint, giving us an amazing picture with a minimal footprint.
The Impact
With one world record broken and amazing viewing figures across Facebook, TikTok and Youtube the show was a complete success. Unfortunately none of our pictures were selected to go in the National Portrait Gallery but they can be viewed on our fridge door.
Sir Lenny Henry said: “The record attempt was amazing and surpassed all my expectations. It was inspiring to see so many artists of all abilities and ages come together.
Seeing 200 portraits of me in person was quite a moment – they were so varied – and I loved chatting to the artists about their work. What a great way to celebrate Portrait Artist of the Year’s tenth anniversary.”
