Red Bull approached Flux Broadcast to be its complete production partner to produce, host and deliver Home Ground – its brand new esports competition.
Some of Europe’s finest teams would go head to head playing Valorant, a globally popular first person shooter. With a new tournament structure, unique scoring system and a £10k prize pool for the winning team, excitement around this competition had built to an epic level.
This event had to be fully remote, with talent, commentators and teams all joining in from the safety and comfort of their own homes.
Our strategy for the production was to create something that felt truly special and would stand out in the packed esports broadcast space. We wanted the tournament to have exciting story beats to not only hook the audience, but make them feel like they were back in a stadium cheering on their team.
A top hosting team of Frankie Ward, James Banks and MitchMan, offered specialist insight throughout the competition and did an amazing job at ramping up the tension at key moments.
Our setup involved a central MCR that could bring in 5 different live video feeds, as well as two observer feeds from the tournaments server. We then overlaid this with dynamic graphics, stings, replays and VT’s to create the complete immersive package.
The most challenging aspect of this project was the timeframe. We had 3 weeks to pull everything together, including booking talent, confirming the teams and creating every single asset! It was a monumental challenge. However, with fantastic planning and some very long spreadsheets, we were able to test and onboard all talent and ensure every asset and graphic was created and tested in time… Even when one of the teams changed their logo a day before going live.
Our remote broadcasting experience meant that dealing with different networks, plus uniquely configured personal setups and rigs was no problem. We even added a delay before going live to make sure there was no chance of stream sniping!
The tournament’s overall impact was massive. It exceeded all predicted viewing figures with over 1 million concurrent views across the entire event and 500,000 watching the showpiece grand final! It was an incredible way to kick off the 2021 esports calendar. At Flux, we’re always proud of the work we do, but here we’ll let the client do the talking:
